We're
REMOTE!
Big Sandy Lodge is 44 miles from the nearest town of
Boulder,
Wyoming. We're at 9,100 feet elevation and bordering
the Bridger Wilderness at the southern end of the spectacular 90-mile
long Wind River Mountain Range. There are no public phones or electricity
here at the Lodge, so leave the rest of the world behind and enjoy the
beautiful mountain scenery, fantastic fishing, horseback riding on wilderness
trails, the smell of evergreen trees, and incredible star-filled night
skies.
Basecamp
for Finis Mitchell
Originally
established in 1929 as a tent camp by Finis Mitchell, well known as
"Man O' the Mountain" and author of the hiking book "Wind
River Trails", the area has changed
little since then. Wildlife (deer, moose and elk) inhabit the area and
are often encountered.
We
have 10 rustic, one-room log cabins that can
accommodate up to 44 guests. Our lodge has group room facilities, meals
served family-style, twin massive stone fireplaces, and a wildlife trophy
lounge. Advanced reservations are recommended for lodging and meals.
We gladly serve as a resupply drop point for hikers on the Continental
Divide Trail (important: send packages at least 3 WEEKS in advance to
ensure it arrives in time). Daily commercial airport service arrives
in Rock Springs, Riverton, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Salt Lake
City, Utah. Shuttle services available from Jackson and Pinedale. Click
here for more information on how to get here.
We're
located at the entrance to the Big Sandy Opening, with access to many
of the Wind River Mountain's trout lakes and streams, flowering meadows,
photographic vistas, scenic trails, pine-scented forests, glaciers,
wildlife, and towering mountain peaks. We are one mile from the wilderness
boundary and next to the Big Sandy Trailhead with access to the breathtaking
Cirque of the Towers and technical rock-climbing locations. Our rates
are family-friendly and groups can reserve our facilities for family
reunions, weddings, and executive retreats. Take advantage of our off-season
rates by booking in June or September. Call or e-mail to make your reservations.
Advanced reservations are recommended.
Note
that our year-round mailing address is Rock Springs, Wyoming, but Big
Sandy Lodge LLC is NOT located in the town of
Rock Springs. We are a remote, summer season lodge high in the Wind
River Mountains open from late May until early October. Our operating
season and opening day any given year depends on when the snow comes
and goes and when the road to the lodge is free of snow. Big Sandy Lodge
is approximately 100 miles from Rock Springs, Wyoming. During the winter
season when the lodge is closed, we reside in Rock Springs. You can
make reservations for your stay any time of the year by calling, e-mailing,
or using snail-mail.

Drop-Off for CDT Hikers:
For
those hiking the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, we accept packages
by mail to be waiting for you when you arrive for a fee of $25.00 per
package. (Please make advance arrangements so we know when to expect you.)
The $25.00 will not be applied as a partial credit towards other services
taken at the Lodge as was done in the past. It is a 200 mile round trip
from the Lodge to Rock
Springs to pick up mail, and we only make the trip once a week, therefore
the $25.00 is non-refundable. If, for some reason you do not pick up the
package and want it mailed back, we will require a $10.00 fee to return
the package. Neither UPS or the US Postal Service deliver packages or
mail of any kind to the Lodge, regardless of what their national advertisements
claim. The correct mailing address to send CDT packages is: Big Sandy
Lodge, #8 Spotted Tail Cir, Rock Springs, WY 82901. We strongly recommend
you use Federal Express. Packages and supplies should be sent at least
3 weeks prior to your arrival. To ensure your package arrives in
time and makes it up to the Lodge on the weekly supply/mail run, please
send it well in advance of your intended arrival date. Sorry, we will
not make a special trip into town mid-week just to check mail.
